This month has been fun, but very hectic

Hello, boys and girly girls. Yes, I am older; get over it! I hope by the time this column comes out, I would have survived my birthday. Within a week, I was in Las Vegas, San Diego, San Francisco, Sacramento and Los Angeles. I felt like a nomad, either sleeping on planes or hotel beds. Don’t get me wrong: some of it was very enjoyable.

Las Vegas

You all know that I am Brazilian and my family is back home in Sao Paulo. After almost five years, my dad finally found time to come visit me. I joined him and my lovely stepmom Debora in Vegas for a five-day family vacation at the Venetian Casino.

I arrived in the morning and had a lot of time to wait for my parents to fly in from San Francisco. What do you do in Vegas when you have nothing to do? Here is what I did; learn from it, and never do it.

I checked in and went to the pool. That was great. While in the pool, I was checking out Grindr to see who was around. After a couple hours went by, I decided to move on to the Grindr, drinks and slot machine combo instead. All was going great. I even hit a small jackpot and was up $400 from $20. However, stupid me, I kept playing and lost it all, plus some more. I did have a good time.

After enjoying the slot machine, I decided it was more economical to hang out with a guy I met on Grindr. The rest I will leave up to your imagination.

That same night, I met up with one of my best friends that live in Vegas. We went to Revolution at the Mirage. It was a pretty good crowd and great music. I loved the Cosmopolitan Casino! It was modern, fun and people were relaxed and all about having a good time.

If you go there, don’t miss STK. This steakhouse was amazing. The concept is good, but not sure if it is practical. It’s supposed to be a restaurant/dance place. The music was fun, but way loud – so if you want to have any conversation during dinner, then don’t go there.

It was great being around family again and it was nice to be spoiled again. I think something was wrong with me when my dad offered to buy me D&G shoes and I said no! What was I thinking?

Sacramento

After I got back from Vegas, and after a brief two-day stay in San Diego, I was off to San Francisco and then to Sacramento.

I landed in San Francisco, got a car and drove to Castro for lunch. The weather was just incredible! On my way to Sacramento, I found an outlet mall and – of course – I had to stop. During that stop, I checked on Grindr. You see the pattern? I made a Brazilian friend whose pictures really looked like a catalog model, but I just went with the flow and we chatted for a couple days.

While in Sacramento, I had the pleasure to attend the Pride month celebration at the state capitol, which included the recognition of eight Californians by the state Assembly. One of those Californians was my dear friend, Nicole Murray Ramirez. I have to say that this was an amazing experience, and at the same time, interesting. Watching the Assembly in session: some assemblymen had their feet up on the desk, texting with not a clue or interest on what was going on.

It was mind blowing to witness three members get up and walk out of the room when the Pride month declaration and awards were being voted. Even more was to see the one voting no! Loud and clear. It just shows we still have a lot of work to do.

I also had a chance to visit some of the nightclubs there. Don’t miss Faces if you go to Sacramento. That place is huge. Terry, the owner, was taking me around town.

On my way back to San Francisco, I stopped by that Brazilian friend’s place. The picture was not a catalog picture; it was really him. I guess that was my birthday gift.

Needless to say, I arrived to the airport with just 25 minutes before my flight was supposed to leave. I was a hot mess running from the ticketing booth to the gate. I felt like I was watching a movie and I was the comedy act.

From festi-chic to glamping, get down on the farm

Last weekend, a crowd of one hundred thousand flocked to Worthy Farm, Somerset, to turn on, tune in… and dress up. Genuine music geeks must be rather cross now that Glastonbury, the definitive alternative music festival, has not only gone mainstream but has been hijacked by fashion.

Still, its peace-loving hippie founder, Michael Eavis, can console himself with the fact despite the impressive stream of acts over the three-day event, it remains the crowd that wields the power.

The mob decides who does well. whoever cracks the Glasto crowd goes on to great things. The same can be said for trends arising, not from the stage, but the mosh pit. Wellies, of all things, being a case in point.

Forget Bono or Beyoncé – who were just two of this year’s line-up: what’s worn by the great unwashed has become a sort of litmus test of current fashion.

Forty years ago the crowd was made up of young people who saw themselves as anti-establishment, anarchistic and alternative. The hip and happening crowd of today’s trendsetters are hardly intent on changing the world; more showing it what to wear.

Being staged in England, in June, in a field, rain and mud had always posed a major challenge in terms of the event ever becoming glamorous.

It wasn’t so much state-of-the-art communal showers, flushing portaloos, en suite tents or even Winnebagos with built-in-spas that changed everything. It was Kate Moss who brought the celebrity and fashion touch in 2005.

Her mix of expensive, elitist, branded, countrified weekend wear (Hunter wellies/Barbours/James Lock Panamas) with the sort of skimpy catwalk gear and laid-back luxe grunge we’ve grown used to seeing the model wear on the cover of Vogue – Maison Margela haute couture yeti jackets, or APC boots – pricked up the antennae of the fashion crowd.

Never mind the practicality of gumboots: the idea of festivals such as Glastonbury and the Isle of Wight being an excuse to dress up – and shop – has set a new precedent. these days (organic) veggie burger stalls have to jostle for a place with pop-up fashion boutiques and nail bars selling the contemporary phenomenon that is “festi chic”, which can be anything from maxi dresses to blow-up angel wings.

Not counting the cost of a ticket or a tent, the average Glasto-goer’s wardrobe this year was estimated at a whopping £350.

For a key festi status symbol D&G bum bag, where you can stash your dry shampoo and baby wipes, you are looking at £550. An Alexander McQueen printed skull scarf will set you back £200.

Other must-have pieces include at least one wafting vintage maxi, several changes of Florence and the Machine-like headgear, designer jeans such as the £170 Paige brand Kate Moss recently gifted friends on her hen weekend at the Isle of Wight, and this summer’s cult shoes: flat, stripy espadrilles (wellies are considered so 2008).

Eco jewellery is deemed vital. Something like Katie Rowland’s upcycled chain necklaces or something urban by The Jacaranda Tree, which uses gold mined ethically from one of the oldest sites in South Africa with the local community producing the pieces as part of a funded training scheme.

Now, pay attention anyone who wouldn’t dream of dirtying their Jimmy Choos by attending a mud-lined music bash. you are not excluded from the latest fashion “look” taking hold of everyday wear. you might never have seen festi-chic in context, but that doesn’t mean you have to be left out when it comes to “glamping” – that’s camping with the glam factor.

Glamping holidays are aimed at the super-rich sophisticate executive who spends half her working life in eight-star luxury hotels so wants her free time to be intrepid, yet equally mirror the high life. her wardrobe requires fashionable, reassuringly expensive staples, the sort so gorgeous you can spend an entire night sitting out under the stars admiring them. next page

Sandusky firefighters request bulletproof vests

While Sandusky police have worn ballistic vests for years, the city's firefighters may soon add them to their list of equipment.

City commissioners plan to review a request Monday to purchase 24 ballistic vests for the fire department.

The city's police officers are also asking to replace their vests, which they do every five years.

The firefighters' vests would cost about $180 each for a total cost of about $16,326, while the police department's 32 vests would cost about $670 each, or $21,422 total.

The fire department's revenue from ambulance transport fees would pay for the 24 vests. The city could save money, meanwhile, by purchasing all 56 vests from D&G Uniform of Akron, city officials said.

Firefighters would wear the vests when responding to calls where they could face the threat of gunfire, fire Chief Paul Ricci said.

"We come into some pretty supercharged environments," Ricci said. "Our advantage there is through our training, to try to handle the situations we find ourselves in."

The fire department's health and safety committee started looking into purchasing the vests two years ago and recently revisited the idea as part of the committee's strategic plan for the next three years.

The committee has laid out four goals to better prepare the city's firefighters when they're acting as paramedics and emergency medical technicians on squad calls.

If commissioners approve the vest purchases, it would take care of one of the four goals.

Unlike police officers' vests, which are worn under a uniform, firefighters' vests are worn on top of the uniform. The vests would be stored in ambulances as part of the standard set of protective equipment, Ricci said.

The three remaining goals for responding to threatening incidents:

* Create a system for setting up an aggressive staging policy in which firefighters are trained to stage two or three blocks from a potentially violent call. They could then wait there until police secure the scene.

* Train the city's 54 firefighters to identify the types of risk common to police, but not as common to firefighters.

* Create guidelines for entering violent situations, such as domestic disputes or incidents involving a knife or firearm.

The health and safety committee found that fire departments in Canton, Ashland and Toledo have carried ballistic vests on their ambulances for several years, Ricci said.

"Obviously you don't want to be in that situation, but it does occur," he said. "We live and work in a very safe community. Unfortunately, police officers and firefighters get into an environment that could be hostile. That's just part of our job and what we're tasked to do."

A few of the other issues city commissioners plan to review at Monday's meeting:

* Expense adjustments, including additional costs in the city manager search and hiring police reserves;

* A proposal to let city residents gain ownership of lots next to their properties if they've been mowing the land;

* A proposal to acquire tax-delinquent properties at 309 Reese St., 306 W. Monroe St. and 1631 Campbell St.;

* A request for a $14,000 change order at the wastewater treatment plant;

* A request to submit a grant application to the Clean Ohio Revitalization fund for the former Apex Manufacturing property.

Dana Martin Davis

When I first met Dana Martin Davis at a fashion event, I liked her flair.

She came across as a woman who knows what she likes, and she treats herself well. Davis is well-known in the art community for her charitable contributions as an individual and for the work she does as chief communications officer of Davis Steel & Iron Co. The company provided the steel fabrications for the Levine Cultural Campus.

On the inside of some of those buildings, pieces of artwork from Davis' personal collection grace the walls. She's donated works to be displayed in the Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture and the Mint Museum Uptown. She recently won the Mint Museum's Spirit Award.

"I like to buy artwork from living artists," said Davis. "If you bring attention to someone who is doing living work, it encourages more of that quality of work to be made."

Davis' eye for art extends into fashion. Whether she's purchasing a painting or a designer dress, her collecting philosophy is the same.

"Once a designer or artist dies, I don't buy it anymore," she said.

It's her way of preserving the integrity of what the designer created.

Milan menswear shows: D&G and Gucci invoke decades past

Isaac Hindin Miller reports from Europe's style capital on the latest in summer menswear fashions.

Dolce & Gabbana

Only one thing was more ripped than the denim at D&G today, and it was the boys on display. In their finale walk, all were topless and so extraordinarily pumped that it wasn't a far stretch to imagine them doing a few quick sets of press-ups before they exited backstage.

Invitations came in the form of vintage print silk scarves like the ones designed by Hermes and Gucci that vintage hunters scour for at flea markets.

Those scarf prints formed the basis for the entire collection - featuring on everything from a pair of shorts to a cropped blazer, a shirt to drop-crotch pants. Mixed with the aforementioned shredded denim jeans and shirts, the offering felt very ironically 90s - never so evident than in a silk bomber that will no doubt be a hipster staple come summer.

With a banging soundtrack that included Prince and James Brown, D&G might just win the award for the most entertaining show of the week.

Gucci

Over at Gucci, Frida Giannini took a road well travelled for the brand - the 70s - this time, young Londoners - "aristocrats, dandies, singers, noblemen and rock stars," declared the show notes. A gentlemen's club dressed by Savile Row tailors.

Surprisingly, it manifested itself in a less formal collection than previous seasons - fewer suits than separates, plenty of open collar shirts, and blazers panelled in beige and light teal that seemed to take cues from windbreakers.

Those sporty elements were scattered throughout - anoraks, red trims on pant hems and easy rubber-soled leather shoes, but the emphasis was on easy movement - pleated pants with slouchy knits and unbuttoned cardigans.

The gentlemen's club looked like a good time - never more so than in the finale evening section. It's a winning formula: cue glitter jackets, cue the party.

Z Zegna

Z Zegna is a constant highlight of the Milan menswear week and today's outing proved particularly significant - as Alessandro Sartori's final collection at the brand, all eyes were on the departing Italian to see which way he'd play it.

Held in the outdoor courtyard of the Zegna headquarters, a white marquee had been constructed, filled with clean light and crisp air - the perfect backdrop to what was easily the best collection of the week.

Volume, colour and proportion were at play: exaggerated, flowing trench coats with trim trousers; body hugging, ultra-cropped jackets with billowing pants, perfectly cut belted blazers, slouchy jersey DBs; Grecian sky blue, white, dijonnaise yellow, bark brown. This was a collection for the record books - one last blast before the final whistle is blown.

Through casual, business, travelling salesman and evening, Sartori proved his prowess with cut, cloth, colour and cohesion, painting with clothing, if such a thing is possible.

When it was all said and done, the applause lasted long after he'd departed the catwalk.

He'll be sorely missed.

Many luxury brands through continuous shop, crazy to seize the domestic market. McKinsey's latest survey showed the typical consumer of luxury goods in China than in Western populations average 15 years younger.

Domestic luxury that more and more stores

Prada has been oversubscribed by 5 times, and they intended to finance the 2.6 billion, most of the funds raised will be used to extend Prada's Guide. In addition, the Coach has been in the United States and listed in the UK Burberry has also announced to go to Hong Kong, China introduced a second listing in the form of listed or quoted.

In this regard, the University of Massachusetts Boston Professor of Chinese Cultural Association consultant Liu Ruiming commented: "The Chinese luxury goods market in 2010 reached 800 billion yuan, will reach 1,800 billion yuan in 2015, when China will account for 20% of the global luxury goods market, and to overtake Japan as the world's largest luxury goods market. "

According to LVMH Moet Hennessy Group (LVMH) Annual Report showed the group a record performance in 2010, sales topped 20 billion euros, net profit for the first time more than 3 billion euros. D&G Buses bought by Arriva - owners blame subsidy cuts for sale

MORE than 160 bus drivers and mechanics have been assured their jobs are safe after transport giant Arriva bought part of a rival firm.

D&G Coach
and Bus has sold its Staffordshire operation to Arriva Midlands for an undisclosed sum.

From August, the D&G name in Staffordshire will be replaced by Wardle, which was taken over by Arriva in December.

Wardle's current base in Burslem will be closed, with more than 100 workers transferred to D&G's site in Adderley Green.

D&G, which employs 62 members of staff in Staffordshire, runs 30 buses across 46 routes.

Arriva Midlands regional managing director Bob Hind said: "We will be able to consolidate both operations on to one site based at the current D&G premises.

"All staff will be transferred to Adderley Green. There will be no changes to staffing levels.

"We will be investing in the site, which will see the engineering facilities extended to cater for the expanding fleet. "We are looking forward to growing the business."

D&G today blamed the sale on Stoke-on-Trent City Council's bus subsidy cuts and reductions in concessionary fare payments to operators.

Its South Cheshire operations are unaffected by the deal.

D&G managing director David Reeves, who founded the company in 1998, said: "As a small bus operator our longer-term viability in Staffordshire and the Potteries was uncertain given the reductions.

"Arriva provides an opportunity to ensure the future of the excellent staff employed by the company."

Bus passengers have been reassured that D&G's routes and fares will not change.

But members of the North Staffordshire public transport users group ACES have raised concerns that another operator has left Stoke-on-Trent.

ACES spokesman Selwyn Brown said: "D&G provides lots of excellent services and has taken over routes which other operators decided were not profitable. Whether Arriva will do something about that, I don't know.

"We thought when Arriva took over Wardle there would be improvements, but we don't seem to have seen any change.

"Other firms have their management team locally, but Arriva has its in Leicester and that is a concern. I will wait to see what happens."

Passenger Louise Whitmore regularly uses D&G services from her home in Stoke to meet friends in Hanley.

The 28-year-old cleaner said: "I like D&G, but I don't really mind what firm runs it as long as the prices don't go up."

Geneva: shopping for calm

Geneva in essence not much different from many small European towns around that you can in two days, having carefully studied all the attractions and local shops a large order. True, in Geneva, the concentration of boutiques, luxury hotels, restaurants, bars and nightclubs are not inferior to many major cities.

Speaking of size, should immediately be said that in Geneva there is no large department stores, which are famous world fashion capital and other cities, where hundreds of tourists flock to shopping. In this Swiss city filled hour boutiques and lots of Russian immigrants living there permanently or temporarily travelers, few come with the main aim to make a purchase.

Shopping for all out of town here is the fun part-time, in between business meetings, exhibitions and so on. Nevertheless, shopping, this is very enjoyable, because it is not peculiar to different cities for shopping tranquility. Filled with department stores and boutiques are only in the late spring and summer. The rest of the luxury boutiques on the street du Rhone met about a dozen visitors a day, and levels of Globus department stores or Bongenie the street march, one might say, is empty. About filling out has always been and will Cornavin Manor on the street, where some come to eat at the top level, while others buy all sorts of stuff on tights and makeup to clothing brands from the middle segment.

On one of the most popular shopping streets of Geneva Konfederason, smoothly passing into the street march and then in the street Reeve, are, in fact, the shopping center Confederation of small cafes, watch and jewelry boutiques, and small shops, where between 100 Swiss francs (about 3500 rubles) can be bought fairly nice dress or shirt shops middle segment H & M, ZARA, Pinkie, C & A, Claire's on a par with many shops of optics, where the price of one and the same model of sunglasses Chanel and Tom Ford may vary up to 100 francs (and this is no joke!), salons technology from Apple to Fnac, boutiques monobrendy well-known brands such as Bally, Swarovski and BCBG Max Azria, cosmetic stores such as Douglas and multibrand selling handbags and shoes. In addition to these three streets are filled with all sorts of cafes and pastry shops, where you can relax in between shopping, work regularly grocery market and the market for old things. Is there and cinema, and a children's store, and souvenir shops, and of course the endless boutiques with a clock.

The famous Geneva department Globus, located between the streets and Marche du Rhone and the area attracts Molar except that the first level with makeup and a good cafe where you can sample everything from Asian cuisine to the traditional Swiss cheese and desserts. However, the area Molar is a great Italian restaurant where the lunch is difficult to find a free place, and which serves excellent pizzas, pastas and salads. In terms of the number represented brands and atmosphere in general is much nicer to shop in a department store Bongenie, located opposite the Globus and assembled at 7 levels eminent brands: Etro, Fendi, Diane von Furstenberg, Armani, Burberry, D & G, Azzedine Alaia, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Hugo Boss, Galliano, Jean Paul Gaultier, Lanvin, Miu Miu, Moschino, Ralph Lauren and many others.

Luxurious in every sense of street-du-Rhône together for its entire length the world's best boutiques of fashion, watch and jewelry brands. Walking through it you can look into the Louis Vuitton, and Boucheron, and Celine, and Graff, and TOD's, and Chanel, and Gucci to Versace. Of course, some brands are not represented in Geneva in the form of boutiques monobrendov, apparently, until there is no pressing need. For example, Prada, YSL and Valentino shows in multibrand Drake Store (street of the Alps) and Anita Smaga (ul-du-Rhône). Speaking of the multibrand, I can not mention one of my favorite place - Septieme Etage. Small multirend decorated in the spirit of the concept boutiques in Paris and New York, which presents the best items from the collections of designers like Alexander Wang, Jason Wu, Doo Ri, Chloe Sevigny for Opening and other young, but very successful brands.

Is it the end of the Super Franky Lampard show?

Lampard has always had fight on his hands. When he came to Chelsea for £11m in 2001, even we were all surprised at the hefty sum paid for a West Ham boy who could pass, take long range shots but rarely score!

However, Ranieri (who I believe still to be our best manager in Roman's era) clearly spotted something the rest of us hadn't and in 2003/4 Frank Lampard was starting to turn in performances that made the £11m Ken Bate's splashed on him look like a meagre pittance compared to Roman's lavish purchases such as Crespo and Veron.

It has to be said that whilst Mourinho made Lampard more ruthlessly efficient; in his last season with Ranieri, where he came second to Ronaldinho in World Player of the Year, Frank was pure and utter dynamite.

As for the England team, the 'can Lampard and Gerrard play together' debate has to be the longest running football debate in football history and yet the jury is still out. Unfortunately for Frank, Gerrard has always been the peoples' choice as his stunning goals and visually imposing play was always hard to overlook.

Mourinho had fine tuned Lampard into a modestly efficient but ultra effective midfielder so Frank was always going to come second best to Stevie G. However, Frank always had the comfort of knowing that he was the biggest star in a title winning side, and that was something Gerrard could never match.

Five years later and Super Frank's future is in serious doubt. 10 goals and 4 assists in 24 league appearances is still a great tally for any midfielder but it may not be enough for Lampard to keep his job.

The stats look good on paper but when only 6 goals are from open play it's suddenly does not meet the high expectations we have for our most attacking midfielder.

Frank has seen enough managers and knows better than anyone the ruthlessness of new Chelsea; he will know that his role in the first team will be closely examined in the summer.

Watching on as man-of-the-match Ashley Young replaced Frank in the England/Swizerland Qualifier after another subdued and uninspiring performance, you wonder whether that may have sealed his fate for Chelsea.

These days Stamford Bridge is not so comforting anymore for Frank as for the first time in years Chelsea are repeatedly linked with younger, better players in Frank's position. Fabregas, Pastore, Modric and now Sneijder.

Certainly only a player's of that ilk could replace Lampard's influence in the team and Frank knows it. However, there are players that deserve to see out their careers at a club and Frank is one of them. I hope he stays and helps Chelsea transit into a new era because he's a fantastic servant and role model.

If all our young aspiring players follow the work ethic and drive shown by Frank in the past 10 years at the Bridge, in players like McEachran, Torres, Kakuta, Ramires, Luiz and Patrick Van Aanholt we will undoubtedly have world beaters on our hands.

As For Frank, he's now got a long much needed holiday to enjoy. Along with his D&G swimming shorts he will be packing away pairs of dark designer shades to help cover his concern as he reads speculation linking us to more World Class attacking midfielders.

He's a fighter and will be up for the challenge, reminiscent of when the 'great' Veron tried to tread on his turf. Whatever the outcome, Frank will rest assured knowing that whoever comes in will have their own fight on their hands if they intend to sit alongside him with greats such as Osgood, Wise and Zola.
