With the tragedy's anniversary coming up Monday, temple members say
they're drawing strength from their religion's tenets. They're planning
to honor the dead with quiet events that include solemn religious
observances and a candlelight vigil, hoping to show the world that the
best way to stand against violence is to come together in kindness and
love.
The events are being planned in the spirit of "chardhi
kala" , a Punjabi term that refers to a state of constant optimism,
temple trustee Harcharan Gill said. Sikhs believe that a positive

The 40-year-old Army veteran, who also shot and
severely wounded an Oak Creek police officer, had ties to white
supremacist groups. But after interviewing 300 people and generating 200
investigative leads, the FBI found no evidence to suggest he had help
or was acting in the name of any such groups.
Several relatives
of the wounded and dead say they forgave Page long ago. Raghuvinder
Singh, whose 65-year-old father has been nearly comatose since Page shot
him in the head, said he relies on Sikhism's lessons of compassion and
understanding.
"I was talking about forgiveness from the first
day this happened," said Singh, a Sikh priest along with his father and
brother. "Sikhism is a peaceful religion. What Sikhism is teaching to us
we are teaching to others. We practice it our whole lives."
While
memorial events are underway at the courthouse, priests at the temple
will begin an "akhand paath" (uh-KUND' pawth), a ceremony in which they
read the Sikh holy book aloud from cover to cover. The rite can take
about 48 hours, and worshippers generally stop by to listen for short

The
next day, the temple and the city of Oak Creek will stage a 6-kilometer
(3.7-mile) run to honor the six victims. The run is free but donations
will be collected for scholarships in the victims' names. Any leftover
funds will go toward the construction of a memorial, Gill said.

Sikh temples generally have four doors, one on each side
of the building, to symbolize a welcome haven for travelers coming from
any direction. The temple is still open to anyone, although officials
have taken a few precautions.
A guard works three days a week in
the lobby, opening the door for visitors and keeping watching for
strange behavior such as drivers circling the parking lot rather than
parking and coming inside. Security cameras and lighting have been added
in the parking lot and around the building. Doors and windows are now

Highway 20 reconstruction planned
A long-planned, mile-long reconstruction of Highway 20 in Chadron is
now planned for the 2016 construction season, and has an estimated price
tag of $5 million, representatives of the Nebraska Department of Roads
told Chadron officials and residents at an information meeting Tuesday.

A new storm sewer underneath the reconstructed street is also a major component of the project, said road designer Lorraine Legg. Much of the existing road has only surface drainage for storm runoff, said Legg, and the new drainage pipes will range in size from 15” to 60” depending on how much water they are expected to carry.
The new storm drains will tie into the City of Chadron drainage system, which is slated for a major reconstruction next year, Legg said. “Between our project and the city’s, the city should have a much better system of collecting (storm) water,” she said.
It was actually the city’s decision to move forward with improvements to its drainage network that led the state to settle on a concrete surface for the highway, according to Hoevet. “We weren’t going to put concrete down with an inadequate storm sewer . If the city wouldn’t fix (the drainage network) we would have milled (the street surface) and repaired the asphalt,” he said.
Although there is a long-standing debate about the merits of concrete versus asphalt for road surfacing, Hoevet said he favors concrete, particularly in a high traffic, urban setting. “Concrete in urban settings is good because it wears well and doesn’t rut,” he said.

In 2005, Highland Park signed on to an honorary pledge to reduce its carbon emissions level by 2012.
That deadline has come and gone. How did the city do? No one knows, because a baseline carbon emissions level was apparently never established.
"I have not been able to find anything in the records," said city Sustainability Director Bryan Tillman.
One of the newest City Council members — the environmentally minded Kim Stone — is pushing for a continued effort to reduce the city's carbon footprint.
"I know we're not doing anything," Stone said.It's reducing the weight of the gridsolarsystemm with the help of superconductor materials. "We're talking, but we're not doing a lot. I'd like to see if we can make some action happen on carbon emissions."
Then-Mayor Mike Belsky signed a U.S. Conference of Mayors' Climate Protection Agreement in 2005 — a nationwide effort that was also signed by leaders in Deerfield, Lake Forest, Northbrook, Wilmette, Evanston, and Chicago. The pledge was to reduce the city's carbon emissions to 7 percent of the 1990 level by 2012 — the target suggested for the United States in the Kyoto Protocol.
Stone said Belsky's pledge was symbolic, and that it may distract sustainability efforts to concentrate on determining a 1990 carbon emissions baseline to compare the city's current levels.
"The question to me in terms of action also is how much energy to do we put into trying to find out our 1990 baseline versus how much are we doing to actually reduce our carbon emissions?" Stone said.
She supports a host of initiatives for the city to make its own facilities and infrastructure more environmentally friendly, as well as looking at ways to encourage local residents and businesses to follow suit.
That means a host of ideas, such as LED street lights to reduce energy use and cost, retrofitting public facilities to become more efficient, streamlining the permit process for solar installations, renegotiating the city's electrical aggregation contract to include more renewable energy sources, and promoting more efficient design standards through city zoning laws.
Highland Park has already performed an energy efficiency audit on its Public Works building and the Highland Park Country Club,Design and manufacture of ledparlightrrp for garments and textile fabrics. and is considering similar studies on other public facilities.
"Energy efficiency is so easy. It's not rocket science. It's fixing things that probably need to be fixed anyway," Stone said. "It's a win-win. there's no reason not to do it."

Planting Something Isn’t the Only Way to Go Green
Every
manufacturing process inherently creates waste. These unwanted
chemical, electrical and even time-and-motion outputs and inefficiencies
not only have an environmental but also an economic cost. There is a
substantial need for some serious mean, lean and green practices that
can help offset the impact a company puts on the environment.
The Utah Manufacturing Extension Partnership, MEP, a non-profit that provides resources and training for small to medium-sized businesses, has sponsored a Green Enterprise Development course, with the objective of helping companies to reduce waste, do more with less and become more efficient and productive in their operations. The Green Enterprise course provides businesses with a broad introduction to sustainability - - focusing on water, air, solids, toxicity and energy management. Sustainability is not just about feeling good, it can help a company save money and attract new customers.
MEP provides a platform for resources and strategic know-how on implementing the best green, lean, and environmentally sustainable practices. Over the last two years that the Utah MEP has taught the course, they have trained approximately 85 people in 50 companies how to add green enterprise development as a part of their normal business practices.
The Green Enterprise Development course started as an eight-week long endeavor, but in the true spirit of lean and green, it is moving towards a more condensed four-week program. Alfa Romeo Spider revealed
The
work is that of Marco Tencone, design chief at Alfa Romeo and Maserati,
and his team at Fiat’s Centro Stile and a satellite studio in Japan.
Tencone’s most recent cars are the Alfa 4C sports car and the new Maserati Quattroporte and Ghibli saloons. Pininfarina, which designed the original boat-tail ‘Duetto’ in the mid-1960s, is understood not to be involved in the design of the new Spider, despite creating the striking 2010 Duettotanta concept.
The Duettotanta blended the slender boat-tail proportions of the original with contemporary body surfacing. Insiders say Centro Stile strived for months to make the design work on a production car.
It is likely that Tencone will take a similar approach for the new Spider, looking at historic design themes but with a very modern interpretation, just as the 33 Stradale has been reimagined for the 4C.
“The new Spider definitely won’t be retro in design,” said a well placed source. “The Spider has to be contemporary and must fit into the range with the modern 4C.”
Another source added: “It would have been easy to go for a retro, boat-tail design, but how would that fit in with the 4C and today’s Alfa designs?”
