John Hollander, Poet at Ease With Intellectualism

The cause was pulmonary congestion, his daughter Elizabeth Hollander said.

As a young poet, Mr. Hollander fell under the influence of W. H. Auden, whose experiments in fusing contemporary subject matter with traditional metric forms he emulated. It was Auden who selected Mr. Hollander’s first collection of poems, “A Crackling of Thorns,” for the Yale Series of Younger Poets, which published it in 1958 with an introduction by Auden.

Mr. Hollander’s wit, inventiveness and intellectual range drew comparisons to Ben Jonson and 17th-century Metaphysical poets like John Donne. The poet Richard Howard, in the book “Alone With America: Essays on the Art of Poetry in the United States Since 1950,” praised “a technical prowess probably without equal in American verse today.”

Early on, Mr. Hollander was tagged a formalist or neoclassicist for his commitment to old-fashioned forms. Beginning with his 1971 collection, “The Night Mirror: Poems,” however, he adopted a more ambitious program, writing poetry of formidable difficulty, often in longer forms.

This evolution culminated in “Spectral Emanations” (1978), a series of poetic visions and prose-poem commentaries linked to the seven branches of the menorah, the golden lamp stolen in 70 A.D. by Titus from the Second Temple in Jerusalem.

His wit and technical mastery remained on prominent display, however, in “The Powers of Thirteen,Use bestroadlights to generate electricity and charge into storage battery group.” an extended sequence of 169 (13 times 13) unrhymed 13-line stanzas with 13 syllables in each line, and in “Reflections on Espionage: The Question of Cupcake” (1976), a commentary on contemporary poetry presented as the coded dispatches of a spy to his handler and other agents.

“In an age that came to prefer loose, garrulous poems filled with confessional sensationalism and political grievance, John Hollander was a glorious throwback,” the poet J. D. McClatchy wrote in an e-mail in 2010. “His materials — high intelligence, wit, philosophical depth, technical virtuosity — looked back to an older era of poetry’s high ambition. His work never pandered; it astonished.”

John Hollander was born on Oct. 28, 1929, in Manhattan. His father, Franklin, was a physiologist and his mother, the former Muriel Kornfeld, a high school teacher. The home atmosphere was relentlessly high-minded.

Perelman and James Thurber. Journalism was his enthusiasm, and in his freshman year at Columbia he was a prolific contributor to The Columbia Daily Spectator.

Poetry displaced journalism as his primary passion. Auden’s verse, in particular, alerted him to the possibility that play and humor could find expression in poetry. He was especially struck, he told The Paris Review, by Auden’s “improvisational relation to stances and forms and literary modes.”

He struck up a close friendship, and a student-mentor relationship, with the somewhat older Allen Ginsberg. In an interview with The Paris Review in 1985, Mr. Hollander said, “We talked about the minute particulars of form as if mythological weight depended upon them; and about the realms of the imagination.”

Their joint excursion to sell blood at St. Luke’s Hospital in Manhattan provided the subject for “Helicon,” one of the most engaging sequences in “Visions From the Ramble” (1965), a collection of interrelated poems filled with scenes from the author’s childhood and youth in New York. (The title refers to a wooded area of Central Park.)

Mr. Hollander graduated from Columbia with a B.A. in 1950 and, after traveling in Europe, received a master’s degree in 1952. At the same time, he taught himself to play the lute and performed in chamber ensembles.

He enrolled at Indiana University to pursue a doctorate but left in 1954 to join the Society of Fellows at Harvard. He later taught at Connecticut College and became an instructor at Yale in 1959, the year he completed his dissertation at Indiana.

His dissertation was the basis for “The Untuning of the Sky: Ideas of Music in English Poetry, 1500-1700” (1961), the first of many works of criticism that included “Vision and Resonance (1975), “The Gazer’s Spirit” (1995) and “The Work of Poetry” (1997).

Mr. Hollander, who lived in Woodbridge, Conn., joined the English faculty at Hunter College in Manhattan in 1966. But in 1977 he returned as a full professor to Yale,Buying bestledlighting is not at all an easy job. where he was named Sterling Professor of English in 1995 and retired in 2002.

In 1953 he married Anne Loesser, a fashion historian who, under her married name, wrote “Seeing Through Clothes.” The marriage ended in divorce. Besides his daughter Elizabeth, Mr. Hollander is survived by his wife, the sculptor Natalie Charkow Hollander; another daughter, Martha Hollander; a brother, Michael; and three grandchildren.

By the mid-1960s Mr. Hollander’s reputation as a poet was growing, although his highly wrought, intellectual verse made him an oddity in a climate dominated by the hotly confessional poetry of Robert Lowell, Sylvia Plath and Anne Sexton.

In a well-known early poem, “The Great Bear,” a children’s outing to gaze at the night sky provokes an inquiry into meaning and chaos. Mr. Hollander incorporated quasi-reportorial material in “Movie-Going and Other Poems” (1962) and “Visions From the Ramble,” which included autobiographical glimpses of the fireworks at the 1939 World’s Fair and tributes to the old Broadway movie palaces that the author haunted in his youth.

In “Types of Shape” (1969) Mr.2013 Collection hidlights 1672 Styles. Hollander harked back to the emblem poetry of the 17th century, writing in forms that, when set on the page, looked like objects: a light bulb, say, or an Eskimo Pie.

Mr. Hollander later dismissed his earlier poetry as “verse essay” or “epigram literature.” With “The Night Mirror” and “Tales Told of the Fathers” (1975) he took the grand, sweeping turn that led to his mature style as a prophetic, mythmaking poet in the High Romantic tradition.

Victoria war veteran chosen to spend day

My trip began on July 7 2013, when I flew from my hometown Victoria BC to Calgary on an early morning flight, where I met up with my guest, retired Cpl Bradley Anderson of 2nd battalion PPCLI. I had not seen Brad since 2011 and wanted to share the All Star experience with him. Next, Brad and I flew to New York City in the middle of heat wave. It felt like going back to the Middle East with the humidity so high. When we landed at JFK, there was someone waiting for us at the arrivals gate to drive us to the hotel. Driving in NYC is intense and only for offensive drivers. We arrived at the modern, updated Grand Hyatt Hotel right near Grand Central Station in Manhattan. The hotel was busy with many representatives from People, MLB, former baseball legends and hall of famers, future All Star prospects and the other contest winners all arriving the same day. Because of the long flights, I was the second-to-last winner to arrive at the hotel, the last being Kevin Burciaga who was representing the Los Angeles Angels and yet to arrive.

The rest of the winners had already gone to the first big event – the MLB All Star Charity Concert benefiting Sandy relief in Central Park featuring the New York Philharmonic and Mariah Carey. The PEOPLE representatives said they could shuttle us before everyone arrived, but Brad and I opted to wait for Kevin first so that we could meet another winner and go to the concert as a group. When Kevin arrived, we went with two representatives of PEOPLE magazine to Central Park to see the show. In the outside area, with the sound of running water that drowned out much of the city noise, a group of police officers, representing the local squads in NYC stood to greet us and were quickly brought to attention to salute. Next the museum staff took us on a private tour, even to sections of the site that were not open to the general public. One interesting fact about the site is that there is one tree now part of the site, that was the only living tree that barely survived the 9/11 collapse of the towers. The tree was transplanted to a nursery where it survived terrible storm. It was nursed back to health before being replanted at the 9/11 memorial site, where it lived through another tropical storm. The tree has taken on special meaning and symbolizes the perseverance of the people of New York who lived through the 9/11 attacks. After our special tour, the representatives thanked us for visiting the memorial museum and presented each of us with commemorative American flag that was flown on the `11th anniversary of the Sept 11 attacks. They said they wanted to present these flags to us, to show appreciation for our service to our countries.

MORE expressions of sympathy were offered yesterday by Cebu officials to the families of the late Interior and Local Governments Secretary Jesse Robredo and Capt. Jessup Bahinting,  who died in last Saturday’s plane crash in waters off Masbate City.

Both Cebu Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale and Regional Trial Court (RTC) Judge Meinrado Paredes said anyone who would be appointed to succeed Robredo has big shoes to fill.

“I hope and I pray it will be somebody like Jesse. Robredo was very ‘accessible’ and would walk the extra mile. His integrity was beyond question. There was  no fanfare in his arrival,” the vice governor said.

Magpale said she will support plans to name the new Philippine National Police Regional Training Center in Consolacion town, Cebu after Robredo, who attended  the groundbreaking ceremony hours before the plane crash.

“I’m for it if only to perpetuate his memory and so that local officials won’t forget his advocacy,” Magpale said.

Judge  Paredes said looking for Robredo’s replacement is an uphill climb.

He said he admired Robredo’s honesty and work ethic.

“Robredo was a model public servant. He lived a simple life. He was credible, honest, indefatigable, and a good family man,” Paredes said.

The Cebu City Council recalled that Robredo worked with the city  government in helping urban poor families  especially those involved in the 93-1 lot dispute and the Mahiga creek settlers whose shanties were demolished.

“We sincerely express the Cebu City Council’s deepest sympathy and condolence to the bereaved family of Secretary Jesse Robredo for this unfortunate demise of a beloved father and husband and to join our Fellow Filipino as the entire nation deeply grieves for the loss of the most highly respected and credible leaders the country has ever had,” said their resolution introduced by Councilor Alvin Dizon.

Robredo was cited one of the country’s exemplary leaders who helped transform Naga City into one of the most progressive cities in the Philippines.

He was known for his advocacies in people empowerment, ethical leadership and good government.

“This unfortunate and untimely demise of a well-respected public servant is a great loss to the country and to the Filipinos,” the council said.

Rep. Gabriel Luis R. Quisumbing of Cebu’s 6th district also condoled with Robredo’s family and hailed Capt. Bahinting for his selfless service to others.

Capt. Bahinting flew in anti-venom medicine from Camiguin province for a Cebu City zoo worker that was bitten by a King Cobra.

“We won’t forget the service Capt. Bahinting rendered for his community and his country.” Quisumbing said.

In Lapu-Lapu City, Mayor Paz Radaza said she knew what the Robredo family felt since she lost her brother-in-law, the father of her nephew Lapu-Lapu City Councilor Harry Radaza, in  a plane crash.

“Our prayers are with him and his family. The country has lost a catalyst of good governance…To the two pilots and their families, our prayers are with them too,” Radaza said.

Although the Islanders play their home games in cool Pacifica

The Pacifica Islanders hit the road again as they traveled into triple digit temperatures. This time it was too Roseville, Ca as they took on the current Pacific Coast Football League's (PCFL) champion, the Roseville Bears. The Bears who are two- time league champions and the 2010 national champs proved to be no match for Pacifica as they were handily defeated 40-7.

The Bears had just completed their 11-2 PCFL season defeating the Nor-Cal Knights in the title game 23-21 while the Islanders were a perfect 12-0 in the Gridiron Developmental Football League.

With a kickoff temperature of 99 degrees and a high of 103 the Islanders not only had to battle the Bears but also the heat. The field was a "pro turf" style field which really radiates the heat. These fields get about 10 degrees hotter than the outside temperature as some Islanders can attest too by their partially melted cleats. In fact, it was so hot that the team's videographer Sean Marchetti needed a new pair of shoes by the game's final as his literally had all the glue melt from between the soles and the shoes separated into layers.

Although the Islanders play their home games in cool Pacifica, they were up for the challenge as they have experience playing in these temperatures, having played numerous games in Fresno and Las Vegas. In fact, by observing the players on both sides it appeared Pacifica was more conditioned for the home team's weather as the Bears players looked exhausted as early as the first quarter. The Islanders took the opening kickoff and produced an 86-yard drive that not only took 11 minutes off the clock but also had the Bears gasping for air as quarterback Myles Gates ran in the first touchdown from the Bears six-yard line giving the Islanders the early 7-0 lead.

The Bears first possession was short as they had to punt the ball after only one series. The Islanders marched right back down and this time it was Gates to Gates as Myles connected with his brother Michael for Pacifica's only passing touchdown on the day, a 25-yard pass completion making the score 14-0.

After gaining big yardage from a penalty on the kickoff the Bears took the field at the Islander 50 yard line. After a few failed plays the Bear's quarterback threw a "Hail Mary" type pass that was caught in the end-zone for a touchdown. This catch gave the Bears some needed momentum and seemed as if it would get them back in the game with a score of 14-7.

The Islanders however responded immediately, driving down the field at ease and scoring once again, this time it was running back Sal Washington with a five-yard touchdown run making the score 21-7 with 1:03 left in the half.

With the exception of the penalty on the one kick the Islanders special teams played an excellent game keeping the Bears starting deep in their own territory all day. This along with strong defensive play lead to the Islanders last score before the half as the Bears were forced to punt from their own five-yard line with only 19 seconds left on the clock. The punt was botched and the Islanders recovered the ball at the Bear 15, setting Fletcher up for the easy field goal and giving the Islanders a 24-7 halftime lead.

The second half started with both teams' defenses making big plays and forcing each other to punt the ball away. The first score in the second half would come with 7:54 in the third quarter as kicker Doug Fletcher connected on another field goal from 27 yards making the score 27-7. The Bears next drive was killed by a Paki Gordon interception, one of three on the day for Paki. This set the Islanders up with excellent field position as their offense started their possession inside the Bears territory. Washington broke a 37-yard run down to the Bears five yard line as the third quarter expired. Running back Michael Blocho scored two plays later. The PAT was missed as the Islanders went up 33-7 with 14:06 left to play in the contest.

The Islanders final score was a quarterback sneak from Myles Gates from the Bear's five-yard line with 8:17 left. The rest of the game was scoreless as the Islanders were once again content with running the clock out.

South Florida’s Eleanor Leinen is trying to change all of that with her Walk Another Way line. Diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in 2003, she was not happy with the lack of choices. So the self-professed glamazon got 9 local artists to put some “pow and wow” into a color palette that never ranged further than basic hues.

“More than often the choices included putrid tan, blah black, institutional white and dog poo brown,” said Lenin from her Hollywood, Florida home. “I’m a fashionista. I was so horrified by the possibility that I might have to wear these shoes.”

At the time Leinen was working on a shoe campaign for Donna Karan (that never made it off the drawing boards) and she had a line of sandals called Fancy Flops, so she was confident she could do better.

“I contacted the owners and manufacturers,” Leinen recalled. “But they told me that they were not interested in making these kinds of changes. They said that women [were] satisfied with what they have. Now 26.7 million people are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes each year and 3/4 of them are women. And those women want style.”

So she started interviewing 62 artists, never telling them what project she had in mind. She then took images of patterns she wanted and “…matched them with the skill sets of the artist, but allowing them to put their own twist on it,” said Leinen.

Diabetics often have nerve damage so they don’t feel when they stub their toes or bump into things with their feet. Injuries are slow to heal. Also the feet tend to sweat more, so fungus infections are common. Orthopedic shoes give both the protection and double-lining (to wick moisture away) that they need. The shoes (Leinin uses the Drew brand of orthopedic shoes) also often have to allow room for single or dual orthotics. Diabetes can cause ulcers and gangrene resulting in amputation. Orthopedic shoes are also worn by people for fallen arches, high arches, bunions, hammertoes, ankle problems, back problems and arthritis.

Bright lights for Little City at Friday luncheon

Little City’s Runway Exclusive fashion show will have glamor in spades. Ford models, decked in looks from Neiman Marcus, will strut the runway. The Fairmont will serve up a decadent lunch. Auction prizes include Christian Louboutin accessories and swank restaurant and theater packages. But even these luxury goods can’t outshine the residents of Little City, the real stars of the event.

For more than 50 years from its 56-acre campus in Palatine, Little City has served adults and children with developmental disabilities, including the most vulnerable in our world: abandoned children, wards of the state and high-needs kids and adults who need 24-hour clinical and therapeutic care that families can’t provide.

“Little City has taken the word ‘disability’ and turned it into ‘ability,’ ” says Eleni Bousis, who is co-chairing the luncheon with the Sun-Times’ Susanna Negovan. “They show that if everyone is given equal opportunity and equal chances in society, they can be productive, too.”

Nobody knows this better than Andrea Hockfield. Her brother, Jerry, who is blind with developmental disabilities, has been a Little City resident for 43 years. After struggling in standard schools as a young child, at Little City he began to thrive.

“For the first time he was recognized for having abilities,” says Hockfield. “They found all the things he could do well and helped him develop those skills.” Today, Jerry spends his days exercising, planting in the horticulture center, throwing pottery, playing music and dining with his fellow residents. For Hockfield’s family, all of whom are involved in the organization (her husband is foundation president Edward Hockfield, her brother is on the board, and her children started the young professionals group), knowing Jerry is at Little City is a gift. “It’s peace of mind, knowing not only does he have a roof over his head, but he’s with people who care about him and respect him.”

Runway Exclusive is one of five major fund-raisers for Little City, which relies heavily on philanthropic support. The organization weathered the brunt of the economic downfall, but recent government cuts for the disabled have made fund-raisers essential to meeting operating costs, which are on the rise. “As the economy suffers, more people are in need of service,” says executive director Shawn Jeffers. But despite the economy, he’s amazed by the commitment of Little City supporters. “People can’t give as much, but they still give. It’s a mission that’s hard not to be touched by.”

This Friday afternoon, Runway Exclusive will celebrate style and raise funds, but it also will honor the Little City residents. In addition to the luncheon and runway event, there will be a musical performance by Hockfield’s brother, Jerry; artwork by residents up for auction; and adults, kids and families from the Little City community on hand to help attendees learn more about the organization and the population it serves.

Marvin - who has experienced an on-off relationship with Rochelle - previously admitted he has always known the 23-year-old beauty would make an amazing wife.

He explained: "I always knew she was wife material - even before we were together. We have so much in common and she's my best friend, which is what you look for in a partner. She was perfect from the start.

The Frasier star originally married Walsh in February 2011, after leaving Real Housewives of Beverly Hills ex Camille Grammer.

The couple decided to renew their vows during a trip to Las Vegas on Saturday (June 2), according to People. The intimate ceremony was held at the Little Church of the West.

The Voice UK: Will.i.am already recording with Tyler James

The Voice UK coach Will.i.am has revealed he’s already recording with some of his artists on the show.

Speaking after yesterday’s final, which saw Team Tom singer Leanne Mitchell walk away with the record contract, Will insisted that his artists wouldn’t go ignored.

“I’ve already started recording with Tyler James, Jaz Ellington and Jay Norton,” he said today. “The annoying thing for me is people go on these shows but it takes forever for their albums to come out. I wanted to do The Voice because I want to speed up the process.

“I just want to come live in London and do that.”

And Will had extra special praise for his finalist Tyler.

“I’ve recorded tracks with Tyler already and we are planning to record more in LA,” Will told the Daily Star Sunday today. “Tyler is needed in the music industry. The world needs Tyler because he is a survivor.

“There are a lot of kids out there that are going through a lot of tough things and Tyler can be their hero because he’s been there and gotten out of it.

“He’s seen dark places and menacing things but has come out the other side.”

Tyler himself revealed: “I’m definitely going to be working with Will. I’d love to do a single with him.

“I have hundreds of ideas and songs in my head so I’m ready for the hard work to begin.”

Keller said he is hearing a lot of excited buzz because auditions for next year start on Monday. Lakes actually has four choirs, beginning with Concert Chorus, which is primarily freshmen, and does not require a tryout  or even vocal skills.

“As long as they don’t have auditory nerve damage, I can teach them to sing,” he said.

Then there is Royal Blues, an all girls group of intermediate to advanced singers; Concert Choir; and the elite Studio Chamber Choir, which has 32 members, all of whom are members of Concert Choir.


And the music does just that.

At Thursday night’s senior concert, the Concert Choir performed the songs for which it won in Vancouver: “Here I am, Lord”; “Musicks Empire”; “This Marriage”; “Make Me An Instrument of Thy Peace”; and “Ain’t Got Time to Die”.

“When they sang, it was hard to find any kind of mistake,” Keller said. “If I had been judging it, they would have gotten close to a perfect score. They’re so incredibly sophisticated.”

"Road" lead producer and sales agent MK2 has also rolled out sales on Abbas Kiarostami's "Like Someone in Love," Xavier Dolan's "Laurence Anyways" and Christian Louboutin's "Crazy Horse Paris-Feu."

At last week's Cannes festival MK2 closed Spain (Wanda Films), Hong Kong (Edko) and Taiwan (Catchplay) on "Road." The former USSR, Baltic States, Israel and Portugal are being signed, MK2 announced Wednesday.

An all-rights U.S. deal was concluded on the eve of the festival with AMC Networks. Its Sundance Selects and IFC Films will jointly release "Road" over this fall/winter.

In all "Road" has now closed more than 50 territories, including deals with heavyweight players in Germany (Concorde-Tele Munchen), Italy (Medusa) and PlayArte (Latin America).

The pic is produced by MK2's Nathanael Karmitz and Charles Gillibert, Salles' longtime producer Rebecca Yeldham and American Zoetrope's Roman Coppola.

In newly-announced deals, Cannes competition player "Love," a Tokyo-set relationship drama, has closed the U.K. (New Wave), Italy (Lucky Red), Taiwan (Filmware) and Hong Kong (Edko). It has already sold nine territories, including a U.S. pick-up from Sundance Selects.

A Queer Palm and best actress Un Certain Regard winner for Suzanne Clement, Dolan's flamboyant meller "Laurence" has clinched Spain (Avalon), the U.K. (Network), Portugal (Alambique), Poland (Spectator) and Hong Kong (Edko). "Laurence's" total territory sales count -- 25 to date -- includes, most notably, Germany (NFP).

"Crazy Horse," Louboutin's 3D performance-based record of Crazy Horse acts, clinched Japan (Gaga), and German-speaking Europe (Polyband).

Prior to the festival, sales included to Benelux (Wild Bunch), Korea (Sponge), Switzerland (Praesens), Austria (Thimfilms), Brazil (Imovision), Greece (Feelgood), Portugal (Midas) and Yugoslavia (MCF Megacom).

Xavier Dolan’s Laurence Anyway, produced by Canadian Lyla Films with MK2 as a co-producer, was picked up for Spain (Avalon), UK (Réseau), Portugal (Alambique), Poland (Spectator) and Hong Kong (Edko).

Prior to the market the film had sold to PFN for German-speaking Europe, Leopart for Central and Eastern Europe and the Baltic States as well as to Benelux (ABC Cinemien), Taiwan (Filmware), Greece (Videorama), Sweden (Folkets Bio) and Israel (Orlando).

Crazy House Paris – Feu par Louboutin — a 3D picture capturing shoe designer Christian Louboutin’s show at Paris’ world famous Crazy Horse cabaret club — was also popular with buyers, selling to Japan (Gaga), Hong Kong (Edko and German-speaking Europe (Polyband). A number of other territories are also under negotiation.

Walter Salles’ On the Road, which was first launched on the market in 2011, also closed its remaining big territories, selling to Spain (Wanda Films), Hong Kong (Edko) and Taiwan (Catchplay). Deals to the ex-USSR, Baltic States, Israel and Portugal are also in the works.

Destroying a Birkin Bag With Francesca Eastwood

For his latest destruction series photo shoot, young Hollywood provocateur Tyler Shields desecrated the ultimate luxury status symbol — an Hermès Birkin bag. And Shields didn’t opt for just any Birkin bag. He selected a red Crocodile Birkin VS, which he says he paid $100,000 for. Shields’s girlfriend, Francesca Eastwood, Clint Eastwood’s daughter, went on to obliterate the coveted handbag by chain sawing through it, setting it on fire, and chain sawing it some more — all while Shields pointed his camera at her.

Now the Internet is abuzz over the act, with one commenter writing on Shields’s Web site: “The money someone would have payed [sic] for the bag would have really gone to needy families or animals, get real!” Another on Jezebel called Eastwood “a horrible human being.” Eastwood has even received death threats over what she and Shields consider to be the creation of art. This isn't the first time the photographer has caused controversy. In 2011, he released photographs of "Glee" actress Heather Morris in a shoot that many complained glamorized domestic violence, and gory images of Lindsay Lohan covered in blood and pointing a gun at his head. Shields spoke to ARTINFO about the Birkin bag fiasco, describing how he acquired the iconic item, why he decided to destroy it, and how he’s going to try to win over critics with a $100,000 donation to a needy family — if somebody buys the photographs.

How did you meet Francesca?

A long time ago, almost a year maybe? A friend of mine was like, "You have to meet this girl, she’s amazing, you should shoot her," and we just did it, and we became friends for a while, and then we started dating.

How long have you been dating?

I want to say eight months.

Why did you decide to destroy a Birkin bag?

Well, I’ve been doing a series for a while where we sawed a pair of Christian Louboutins in half, and whenever I asked anybody, “What’s the best brand? What’s the biggest thing?" Everyone said, "the Birkin," and then I looked it up, and the cheapest one is like $30,000. There’s a waiting list to get them — these things are amazing. And when I was in London doing my last gallery [exhibition] I ended up getting the opportunity to get one, and I did.

Where did you get the bag?

I got it from — basically one of my very good friends over there has a bunch of them, and they set me up with the person who they get them from, and somebody brought me one in the trunk of a Bentley.

I think if people are [upset] because I spent money on a photo shoot, then they should be upset about every single photo shoot that takes place ever. A $100,000 photo shoot, actually — Paris Hilton spent $200,000 on her album cover. The catering budget for the movie “John Carter” was $5 million. It takes money to make art. People spend money to make their work. If I was operating a McDonald’s, would people be upset because I bought inventory? How many people buy sports cars? How many people buy watches? What if I bought a $100,000 car and I crashed it? I’m not taking anything away from anybody else. That’s the thing, somebody wrote me an email, and she was very upset, and she was like, “How could you do this? You should have given that money to me.”

Fans of the red-bottomed shoe designer who lack the funds to adorn their feet with Louboutins will be delighted to know they’ll be able to get their hands on much cheaper Louboutins – in the form of cosmetics!

Christian Louboutin announced recently that he is set to enter the beauty industry, having teamed up with Batallure Beauty to form Christian Louboutin Beauté.

Chairman of Batallure Beauty Robin Burns commented: “Wearing a pair of Christian Louboutin shoes completely transforms a woman and Christian will bring that same transformative quality to women through his beauty products.”

Considering the inspiration for his signature red soles was a bottle of bright red nail enamel, it seems a cosmetics collection is the perfect way to go for the man whose aim in life is to make women look and feel beautiful.

Louboutin said: “Twenty years ago I started what I thought would be a small adventure, which ended up becoming a company. The beauty adventure is a natural extension for someone like me, who likes to empower women. To be a part of creating beauty seems like the right next step.”

2012 has been a huge year for Louboutin, as the French designer celebrated the 20th anniversary of his eponymous brand with plenty of pomp and splendor: he launched a coffee-table book and an anniversary collection, and the Christian Louboutin exhibition is currently showing at London’s Design Museum.

2013 looks set to be just as big, as the luxury beauty products are expected to launch late in the year. Although there have been no previews of the Christian Louboutin Beauté, we would expect nothing less than luxury and elegance from Mr Louboutin – and, of course, plenty of his signature glossy scarlet.

In their risky shoot, the couple burnt the $100,000 crocodile skin version of the bag in the name of art.

In one snap, Francesca is also seen fanning the flames even further by blowing on it with her red-painted pout.

As well as engulfing the leathergood in flames, the teenager also put the handles of the bag in her mouth in order to play a game of tug of war.

The pair finish off the tote by slicing it in half with a chainsaw.

This isn't the first luxury item that has been destroyed for one of Shields's shoot.

A pair of Christian Louboutin shoes were also wrecked in the name of photographic art.

Bachelorette Meagan Good at Pussycat Dolls Burlesque Saloon

The theme of Friday night’s Pussycat Dolls guest performance by actress Meagan Good at Pussycat Dolls Burlesque Saloon inside Gallery Nightclub at Planet Hollywood was “Act like a Pussycat Doll, think like a man,” and the bride-to-be celebrated her bachelorette party with the sexy act that is on the bucket list of the star of the hit film “Think Like a Man.”

Twenty of Good’s friends and family members, including her future mother-in-law(!), as reported by Robin Leach in his interview with Good posted on Friday, were there to cheer her on and celebrate. The bachelorettes were dressed like Pussycat Dolls, and for Pussycat Dolls creator Robin Antin, she faced the unique challenge of dressing a guest Pussycat Doll who is about to wed a preacher -- in this instance, DeVon Franklin, a Hollywood executive and producer who is a Seventh-Day Adventist.

“We covered Meagan up a little more than our past guest Pussycat Dolls,” Antin said. “But she is so stunning that it didn’t matter.” And Good’s advice on being a purr-fect Pussycat Doll? “Be true to who you are.”

To congratulate Good on her upcoming nuptials, the Pussycat Dolls and Antin presented Good with a three-tier, burlesque-themed red velvet cake. Good picked up the cake and bit into it for photographs moments after shooting photographs and videos of the cake for herself. Before changing for her performance, Good wowed on the arrivals carpet in a white, full-length gown by BCBG.

“I think my future in-laws wanted to see how I would look in white,” joked Good, who noted that her future mother-in-law helped select the dress. Antin wore a black leather dress by The Row paired with nude Christian Louboutin pumps. Ryder Hesjedal became the first Canadian winner of the Giro d’Italia today in the closest race for 38 years.

After 91 hours of racing over 21 stages, the title was decided by just 16 seconds – the smallest winning margin since Eddy Merckx’s 1974 12 second victory over Gianbattista Baronchelli.

Going into the final stage of the three-week Grand Tour, Hesjedal trailed Joaquim Rodriguez by just 31 seconds.

This left the Garmin rider with around one second to close for each kilometre of the 28.2km Individual Time Trial through the streets of Milan.

At 73 kilograms, Hesjedal is a stronger time-trialist than Rodriguez, who at 58kg is more suited to the mountains. The Spaniard’s race today was intended solely to “limit my losses as much as possible,” he said. To add injury to any insults, he suffered a collision with a crash barrier during a practice of today’s route.

But the race was really won in the unforgiving Dolomite Mountains where Hesjedal proved himself to be one of the best climbers on the Giro, riding far beyond his relatively heavy weight and even gaining valuable seconds on his main rivals during stage 19.

“We were supposed to drop Ryder Hesjedal but it's been the opposite,” Rodriguez said after stage 19, having failed to keep up with the Canadian. ”Hesjedal gave us a lesson. He has surprised me, really.”

Today, Hesjedal rode a strong race to average over 49km/h and finish in sixth place, 1minute 9 seconds behind stage winner Marco Pinotti. Rodriguez finished a further 47seconds down.

Clad in the leader’s pink skin-suit, Rodrigruez will have been all too aware that his lead was rapidly slipping away from him. As Hesjedal’s celebrations had already begun – the maple leaf being flown and hugs being exchanged over the safety barriers – the rider in pink was the only soul left on the road.

Dining, From A to Z

My wife had a legitimate question: What was I doing one night last week having dinner with seven young women whom I'd never met before? The simple answer was because they'd invited me.

They read my column, at least one of them does, and she thought their monthly dinner club, where they select restaurants by traveling through the Zagat guide alphabetically—one restaurant per letter—would make interesting column fodder. They've been meeting since May 2010 and are nearing the end of the alphabet. Hence, that evening they were convening at a new restaurant in the West Village that started with the letter "W"—Whitehall.

I explained all this to my wife, who still didn't appreciate the novelty, or see the news value. There were probably women meeting for dinner all over town that evening, she suggested, and every evening since we were a British colony.

Perhaps so, I replied, but they weren't this organized. Didn't these ladies at least deserve some credit for endurance, for managing to meet every month, no matter the myriad distractions their careers and personal lives, and this teeming metropolis, threw in their face. I mean, they'd been gathering for 25 months straight! Indeed, this night marked their second anniversary!

Plus, we had no dinner plans ourselves that night.

I'll admit that when I arrived at the restaurant and introduced myself to the women, who range in age from 27 to 33 and were standing at the bar awaiting a table, I felt momentarily awkward. One would be—sitting down with seven strangers, let alone all of the opposite sex, and half your age.

Which, for some reason, reminds me of a story. One evening a number of years ago I was strolling down Third Avenue in the vicinity of Ninth or 10th street when I passed a restaurant with sidewalk tables. One table in particular caught my eye, because it was large and with many people seated around it—and because of the gender imbalance. The ratio was similar to the table at the Whitehall where I was being seated.

I took a closer look and recognized one of the women as a casual acquaintance of mine who worked at Vogue magazine. She was glowing abnormally, as were all the other women at the table. I realized that's what had probably caught my eye—not that the guy was so vastly outnumbered, but that each woman wore the identical hypnotized smile, an expression that I can only describe as aphrodisiacal. I finally got around to looking at the guy and realized why: It was Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones.

I'm not trying to suggest that I had the same effect on the members of the Zagat Dinner Club, as they call themselves. Only that, for some reason, the unusual circumstances roused that ancient memory from my subconscious.

The restaurant was extremely noisy, and I'm hard of hearing under such circumstances, and not very good with IDs anyway, especially when I'm introduced to seven people simultaneously. So I'd like to apologize in advance if I misattribute anything they said. I'd only planned on staying for a drink, but the women were extremely welcoming and seemed as natural and unaffected as if I wasn't there. And the food was very good.

Gucci Won Its Trademark Suit

While battling in court from late March to April, Gucci accused Guess, Inc. of copying their interlocking G logo, their red-striped color scheme, and their "shading" patterns, among other things. In their defense, Guess insisted that they got "inspiration" from all sorts of places, and they just plain didn't know why their shoes and other items looked so much like Gucci's. Unsurprisingly, the court sided with Gucci, and yesterday, a federal judge in Manhattan awarded Gucci $4.7 million in combined damages from Guess and its shoe licensee, Marc Fisher Footwear, WWD reports.

Of course, Gucci should be happy they technically won, especially since they first filed this suit back in 2009. But the damage fees are a tiny fraction of the $221 million Gucci wanted, which suggests they might try to pursue the case further. Although Gucci has yet to release a statement about the outcome, Guess CEO Paul Marciano said yesterday that he wished the case could have been resolved between the two companies instead of in court. Indeed, it's unusual for these scuffles to happen so publicly.

With this happening on the heels of the YSL versus Christian Louboutin case last summer, it's been a big year for high-profile fashion trademark lawsuits, highlighting the gray areas in federal law when it comes to such matters. But since the CFDA didn't have much luck lobbying for new antipiracy laws in Congress last year — not to mention that consumers will always want to buy cheaper knockoffs of designer clothes — these problems will probably continue to surface.

MK2 'Crazy' for 3D sales

Gaul's MK2 is entering the international 3D sales biz.

The shingle, a French digital cinema pioneer, has digitized its circuit of 60 screens, and has been very successful programming opera and sports events in its theaters, said MK2 prexy Nathanael Karmitz.

Now it's looking to sell at least one high-profile 3D entertainment-based feature a year for foreign theatrical and TV, according to Karmitz.

The first 3D project on its sales slate is "Crazy Horse Paris -- Feu by Christian Louboutin in 3D," an omnibus of 12 live acts at Paris' iconic club designed by Louboutin and directed by France's Bruno Hullin, whose credits include the 2010 World Cup sportscasts.

The 80-minute "Crazy Horse" also features interviews with Louboutin and performers. David Lynch composed a musical piece for the show, as did Natacha Atlas.

MK2's core business is, and will remain, its production of four features a year, Karmitz said.

Three MK2 productions play Cannes official selection: Walter Salles' "On the Road," Abbas Kiarostami's "Like Someone in Love," both in competition, and Xavier Dolan's "Laurence Anyways," in Un Certain Regard.

The much-anticipated fashion event "The Front Row" lands on Bethesda Row beginning Thursday, and more than 40 fashion events, a film screening and a cameo by the Bravo Network's Andy Cohen are on the agenda.

The event launches Thursday evening with a free screening of "God Save My Shoes" at the Bethesda Row Landmark Cinema -- a documentary that "journeys into women’s psyche and closets" to explore their relationship with shoes. The film highlights shoe designers including Christian Louboutin, Manolo Blahnik, Pierre Hardy, along with celebrities like Fergie, Dita Von Teese, and Kelly Rowland. Bennhold polled 44 of her "highly educated" European and American friends, most of whom have children and jobs and share money with their husbands, because she was interested how they divvy up costs, given that most of her friends make less money than their spouses. Well, no, she was interested in what the men felt comfortable allowing their wives to purchase — because, apparently, these men don't ever buy anything frivolous, as they are pillars of stoicism and security working tirelessly to make sure their ungrateful wives can buy Jimmy Choo and Christian Louboutin heels. Jessica Simpson ‘can't help but play dress up’ with her daughter

Jessica Simpson’s daughter Maxwell may only be two weeks old, but she’s already a fashionista. First-time mom, Simpson, 31, a singer, actress, fashion designer and Fashion Star mentor of her own, is enjoying shopping for clothes and accessories for her baby girl.

“I'm addicted to buying headbands w/ massive flowers for Maxwell on etsy!” she tweeted. “She is insanely beautiful I can't help but play dress up!”

Britain's Got Talent 2012: Hope Murphy wants record deal

16-year-old Hope Murphy has said she hopes that Britain’s Got Talent will land her a record deal.

The young singer wowed the judges at her original audition, performing This Woman’s Work, and will sing live tonight for a place in the final.

“It is something I’ve watched on the television at home from a very young age and I have often wished it was me up there performing, it’s such a great platform!” Holly said today.

She went on: “Everything has just been such an amazing experience! But I have to say, singing in front of all the Judges especially Simon Cowell was nerve racking but the most surreal but enjoyable experience!

“The responses I have had on Twitter from the likes of JLS, Boy George, Little Mix, Shayne Ward and some of the TOWIE cast have been overwhelming as well!”

The teenager admitted she was nervous about the live shows, and revealed it was Simon Cowel she was hoping to impress: “His comments on my audition were really constructive so I really want to show that I’ve listened to him and hopefully given him a performance to remember.”

In what's probably going to be our favorite designer collaboration of the season, Christian Louboutin will be putting his own touch on Cinderella's glass slippers this summer.

Women's Wear Daily reports that the shoe designer will be crafting his own pair of magical shoes in honor of Walt Disney’s rerelease of “Cinderella” on DVD this fall.

If you've never seen Disney's "Cinderella," first of all: WHAT? But anyway, in the 1950 movie, the heroine lives with her evil stepsisters and is forced to do the housework while they go out and party, until a Fairy Godmother grants her a carriage, a ball gown and the famous "glass slippers" and sends her to Prince Charming's ball, where the prince falls in love with her even though he has to do some major shoe sleuthing to eventually find her.

The magical heels will formally be revealed this summer.

Disney has had some fashion pair-ups in the past, mostly in the bridal department. The Disney Alfred Angelo wedding dresses let you marry your own Prince Charming in a gown inspired by one of Disney's princesses. There's also a line of Disney princess engagement rings.

And soon, brides and shoe-lovers everywhere will be able to slip into their own pair of glass slippers.
