WKU stretch from light bulbs to diplomas

Western Kentucky University plans to replace light bulbs that last maybe three years with bulbs that can last 16 years. It may not sound like a big deal, but the cost savings are huge. 

Dale Dyer, WKU manager of plant operations, said the more efficient light bulbs cost the same and will continue an energy savings and efficiencies strategy that has reaped millions in savings since the 2007-08 school year throughout the university’s operations. 

The campus kilowatt hours per square foot have dropped 21 percent since that school year. The new light bulbs, part of a project not out to bid just yet, will continue the reduction of campus kilowatt hours per square foot. 

“In energy management, we push the envelope,” Dyer said. 

For example, beginning in 2010, WKU converted its heat plant to operate fully on natural gas. It took coal boilers that are 65 percent energy efficient and replaced them with 84 percent efficient natural gas boilers. Dyer calculates the cost savings in that step alone at $1.4 million annually. 

During the summer session, visitors to the highest point of the Hilltoppers’ main campus – Cherry Hall, Garrett Conference Center and Potter Hall – have seen digging crews hard at work. The project was the upgrade of the 5,000-volt electrical system there to one of 12,470 volts. Called “a redundancy in flow” by Dyer, the new system will help prevent power outages. In addition to the electrical upgrade, upgrades to the underground steam distribution system are about 40 percent complete. 

“There is always new stuff,” Dyer said. Soon, the university will put out to bid the parking lot lighting with LED – light-emitting diode – instead of the current HID – high-intensity discharge – bulbs. HID lights create more heat, which makes them less efficient, Dyer said. 

“We can control the lights differently,” Dyer said.We have a wide selection of ledspotlight to choose from for your storage needs. By using the Internet, the lights on-off frequency and durations can be controlled. “The lights have their own Web address,” he said. 

Energy efficiencies aren’t the only efficiencies explored by WKU. University officials also look at students’ time efficiencies. 

It is estimated that a student loses about $10,000 each extra semester he or she is enrolled in college.

More than 26 percent of students pursuing bachelor’s degrees graduate within four years, and greater than 45 percent graduate within five years, according to a report on cost savings and efficiencies prepared by university officials. 

“There is more than one path to a degree,” Emslie said. Bangor district works on five-year plan

Recognizing the need to prioritize spending needs for the future, Bangor School Board members hope to soon approve a five-year plan.

The plan, introduced to the school board last week, is expected to have three main priorities: Replacing sections of the roof at the middle/high school, expanding school security systems and reducing heating/cooling and energy costs.

The list of things needing to be replaced or upgraded was put together recently by the district’s Buildings and Grounds Committee.

“I guess the big thing for us is to get that five-year plan put together and show it to this board,” Superintendent Dave Laehn said.

School board President Dave Vetrano, who chairs the building and grounds committee, said the list will be for more expensive items, with departments able make decisions on improvements costing less than $2,000.

He said the committee can look every year at what can be taken off of the list and what should go onto the list.

“So we start documenting everything that we really need to do,” Vetrano said.

“Big ones, not so big ones, so we can get some things on a rotation and every year update that plan.”

While Vetrano called the list “comprehensive,” Laehn said the roof, security and energy efficiency are by far the main priorities.

Laehn said the middle/high school, which was built 15 years ago, has some “trouble spots” on the roof, and that areas will be replaced section by section.

“To do it all at once is just so cost prohibitive,” Laehn said. He said he’s not sure what the repairs will cost.

No money for the repairs has been set aside in the upcoming budget, so he expects work to be done further into the future.

The district is in the midst of updating its security system, at an estimated cost of $25,000.

Cameras have been added in the middle/high school, and school now has a controlled access entrance.

There are plans to add security cameras to the elementary school and the bus parking lot area.

Laehn said there also are plans to replace the lighting in the elementary school an outside the middle/high with more energy efficient LED lights.

Also, he said the district needs to update its heating/cooling system, so that when only certain sections of the schools are used in the summer, only those sections would need to be cooled. More information about the program is available on the web site at indoorlite.

New LED flood light for mining from Hella

Hella Inc. has introduced the first LED floodlight designed specifically for the mining industry. Based on a proven expertise and success in developing advanced LED lighting technology, the new HELLA HypaLUME LED flood light is designed to withstand long periods of use in rigorous applications across an extreme temperature range from –40 °C to +50 °C  with no decrease in light output.

This revolutionary LED flood lamp incorporates 56 high powered LEDs to produce an output of more than 20,000 lumens. The LEDs have a color temperature of 5700K, providing a near daylight environment and ensuring high color rendering. They are coupled with three specialized optical distributions to effectively meet all lighting application requirements.

Research like this is key to making LED lights even more usable in the home. Now they are mainly marketed as replacements for halogen bulbs, because of their white light. If they are advanced so they produce a warmer light, then they could be used in regular lamps and lights around the home for ambient and mood lighting.

They offer a wide range of different types of LED downlights, from cool (4000k) to warm white (2700k). They use a colour chart that helps you to pick which kind of LED light is best for you, so you don't unwittingly buy a colour that is too bright for the room. Cool whites work best in white or blue rooms, or in commercial settings, such as a bathroom showroom, and warm whites work best with warmer colours such as orange or yellow.

Arkema commercialises new acrylic for LED lighting

Arkema Group has commercialised a new grade of acrylic resin that is better suited to handle modern LED lighting.

Arkema — based in Colombes, France — began making Plexiglas Diffuse-brand resins in March at its plant in Pennsylvania, the US. Production of the materials at an Arkema plant in Rho, Italy, will begin in May.

The material can diffuse light in LED applications without compromising overall light transmission, officials said. Typical applications for Diffuse-brand resins include architectural and indoor commercial lighting.

"The standard product had been a frosted-type product," LED lighting business development director Michael Lamarra said in a recent phone interview. "But it just didn't have enough diffusing power for LED emitters, which are very bright and produce an intense amount of light."

In order to get more diffusing power, lighting makers had been adding white colour concentrates to acrylic resins, but doing so was hurting the products' light transmission rates by 15-30%, he added.

Diffuse-brand resins now can provide better performance in what Lamarra described as "places where glare will hurt your eyes".

The materials also offer outstanding UV resistance and weatherability and excellent surface gloss and scratch resistance, officials said. The resins also can easily be extruded, injection-moulded, thermoformed or cut. They're recyclable and are available in smooth or textured surfaces on extruded lenses.

LED lighting applications are expected to average 12% annual growth between 2011 and 2017, Arkema officials said, with commercial applications making up the largest single LED end market.

The city is testing three types of LED (light-emitting diode) streetlights in three areas of the city.

The lights, while as much as six times more expensive, have a payback period of less than four years in terms of energy savings, said Jack Suggs, the city's electric department director.

The lights also last as long as 25 years, while the city's 5,800 current high-pressure sodium lights usually have life spans of around three years.

"It leads me to believe that LEDs are the wave of the future," Suggs said. Crews have installed eight streetlights each in three areas; Montana Avenue, Woodland community and Emory Valley Road.

The types of LEDs being tested vary to suit different environments: more direct lighting for wooded, hilly Montana Avenue, lights that aren't as focused for irregular-shaped streets and lots in the Woodland community, and high-powered, whiter lights to illuminate broader swaths on Emory Valley Road.

"We want to see what kind of comments we get and if we have any problems," Suggs said of the trial runs. In the past, the city has experimented with earlier generation LED streetlights.

"We have had mixed results in these early test(s), including unacceptable light output and a couple of premature failures," Suggs wrote in an email.

He said if feedback on the newest generation of LED streetlights is mainly positive, "City Council will see a long-term program proposed."

Currently planned is the installation next fiscal year of 300 LED streetlights. Suggs said $100,000 is now budgeted for that program.

It's anticipated it would mark the start of a gradual systemwide conversion to LED lighting that would span several years and adapt to evolving technology.

Wawasee Assessing Energy Cost Savings

The bottom line is when a school corporation can save on energy costs, it frees up money that can be used elsewhere.

Especially the last few years, budgets for the Wawasee Community School Corp. have either shrunk or shown very little increase. This has created an urgent need to look for ways to reduce energy costs.

The school corporation has already utilized the services of Performance Services of Indianapolis to implement several energy saving measures throughout the corporation – physically and behaviorally — and recently took another step to reduce energy consumption.

Last week, representatives of Energizing Indiana, as well as NIPSCO, toured Wawasee Middle School to do a thorough energy assessment of the entire building. Joining them and all with WCSC were Bob Lahrman, director of support services; Randy Johnson, energy management supervisor; and Brian Taylor, director of facilities and maintenance.

Energizing Indiana is a united effort by the Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor, participating utilities and consumer organizations to offer comprehensive energy efficiency programs that bring savings to communities statewide. NIPSCO, in partnership with Energizing Indiana, offers a school audit and direct install program.

Schools can submit an application to participate in the program. WMS, originally built in the late 1980s and more than 20 years old, qualified. Last year, after considering having a geothermal system installed at WMS, the school board voted against it.

Doug Munz and Seth Little of Energizing Indiana were assisted by Chris Pieri, school account representative of NIPSCO, for the energy assessment of WMS. For the last several years, many energy saving measures have been implemented at WMS including, among many others, replacing existing hot water heaters with energy efficient ones, installing carbon dioxide sensors in the large areas and replacing most heating coils in existing air handlers.

This summer, an energy management system will be installed to control exhaust fans, motion sensors for hallway lighting will be installed and the air compressor will be removed from the boiler room.

School building energy assessments include, but are not necessarily limited to, the heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, lighting, kitchen appliances, insulation levels and other building systems. Munz, Little and Pieri noted they were positively impressed by all the energy saving measures already in place, but typically even more can be done. A detailed report will be submitted to the school corporation within the next couple of weeks.

Part of the school energy savings program includes Energizing Indiana installing energy efficient products to include vending machine controllers, compact fluorescent light bulbs, occupancy sensing power strips, lighting occupancy sensors and LED exit signs. Noting most exit signs are already LED at WMS, Little suggested focusing on the vending machines and occupancy sensors, which was agreed upon. The energy saving products are scheduled to be installed Wednesday, Little added.
