With
temperatures reaching above 100, the Sherman and Denison high school
marching bands fought the heat this past week at their summer band camps
to begin preparing for the 2013 marching season.
Both
bands spend their mornings during band camp outside, going over
marching basics and learning the drill that make up their shows. After
marching drills, they each go inside to work on music to give band
members a break from the rising temperatures.
“Everyone
is working really hard, but we’re having a lot of fun, too,” said
Denison High School’s Touch of Gold Band Director Paul Onspaugh.
Sherman’s band staff has undergone changes, with Ana Hinojosa stepping in as the new colorguard director.

recommended by a fellow director in North Texas,” said Sherman Bearcat

Sherman’s
marching show this year is entitled “Through Darkness, Light” and will
be featuring a light show alongside it’s music, employing lanterns and

“We’re

community, and especially the business community.

just been so blessed by the reaction and the trust that they’ve put in
our vision and knowing that we’ll have a product that they’ll be proud

Denison’s Touch of Gold Band is practicing for its show entitled “Forever and Again.”
“We’ve
got a very high energy show this year,” said Onspaugh. “Our show starts
off with a song called ‘Perpetual Motion,’ and this is a continuous
high energy performance from beginning to end The kids are seeming to
really enjoy it.”
Because
this is state contest year for both marching bands, there is added
pressure on the students and staff to succeed. Texas UIL allows marching
bands to compete for the State Marching Contest every second year. This
means that band members only have two opportunities in their careers to
go to the state contest, and the competition among bands for a spot,

In 2011, Sherman advanced to the finals round in the state contest, but they’re taking nothing for granted this year.
“We’ve
been blessed in years past, but there is no guarantee that we’ll go

in their contest drills by attending the weekly football games and

Highway 20 reconstruction planned
A long-planned, mile-long reconstruction of Highway 20 in Chadron is
now planned for the 2016 construction season, and has an estimated price
tag of $5 million, representatives of the Nebraska Department of Roads
told Chadron officials and residents at an information meeting Tuesday.

A new storm sewer underneath the reconstructed street is also a major component of the project, said road designer Lorraine Legg. Much of the existing road has only surface drainage for storm runoff, said Legg, and the new drainage pipes will range in size from 15” to 60” depending on how much water they are expected to carry.
The new storm drains will tie into the City of Chadron drainage system, which is slated for a major reconstruction next year, Legg said. “Between our project and the city’s, the city should have a much better system of collecting (storm) water,” she said.
It was actually the city’s decision to move forward with improvements to its drainage network that led the state to settle on a concrete surface for the highway, according to Hoevet. “We weren’t going to put concrete down with an inadequate storm sewer . If the city wouldn’t fix (the drainage network) we would have milled (the street surface) and repaired the asphalt,” he said.
Although there is a long-standing debate about the merits of concrete versus asphalt for road surfacing, Hoevet said he favors concrete, particularly in a high traffic, urban setting. “Concrete in urban settings is good because it wears well and doesn’t rut,” he said.

Hoevet said, but noted that the cost differential has been reduced because of increases in the cost of oil, which is used to make the tarry asphalt surface.

Lexus of Lakeway ready to roll into town
Lakeway will be getting its own Lexus service center and car
dealership within the next two years, designed to serve the more than
5,000 Lexus customers the company has identified in the area through
surveys.
The service center, which will be located at the northwest corner of FM 620 and Clara Van Road, will be an extension of Lexus of Austin and will both service and sell cars. The dealership will be developed on 20 acres of a 39-acre plot, the rest of which will be developed into restaurants and other businesses. The service center itself will have a full-service barista bar and boutique.
“We are really coming from a place of convenience for the customer,” said Lexus event marketing director Cassie LaMere. “We want to reduce travel time and improve safety for our customer, and this offers them more time to get in,Standard solarmodule replacement bulbs. get their needs met and get back to their families or back to work.”
Steve Witt, consultant at Lexus of Austin and a Lakeway resident, said the new location was designed expressly to fit with Lakeway’s natural aesthetic.
“We’re working with the existing topography and working with the existing tree survey to minimize impact on trees and terrain,” Witt said. “Instead of just having a large parking lot with a sea of cars, there’s parking around the trees, and we have wooded drives. It’s very integrated; it’s not just a parking lot with lights on it.”
LaMere said the dealership will help the city’s sales tax revenue and offer employment opportunities. Lakeway City Manager Steve Jones said administrators are generally approving of the facility and described the anticipated structure as “attractive.”

Connecting packaged LEDs
Over the years, multiple connector companies developed a number of sockets for the high-power LEDs that came to market. The emergence of COB LEDs posed different challenges to fixture manufacturers: how to provide power to these devices and then affix them to heat sinks in the lighting fixtures. The traditional method was to hand-solder the wires to the pads on the substrate and then secure these assemblies with screws to the heat sink — a process that was time consuming and subject to variability. As with the earlier discrete devices, this presented an ideal opportunity for socket solutions.
TE and other connector companies addressed this emergence of initial COB devices the same way earlier discrete LED packages were addressed: custom sockets.The industry's leading manufacturer of floorlamps. As other COBs started to enter the market, connector manufacturers realized that the status quo method of developing a socket for each would be prohibitively expensive and time consuming, resulting in never-ending efforts forever chasing the next new COB to enter the market.
With well over 50 different COB products commercially available around the world from multiple manufacturers, finding a single solution to address each would be a challenge to say the least. Aside from the fact that all were rectangular, all had two electrical contact pads, and most had circular light emitting surfaces, there were few other dimensional similarities. The challenge for connector companies was how to address these varied but similar COB LEDs with a minimum of engineering and tooling expenditure while providing a future-proof and flexible platform based product.
One solution to the interconnect challenge is a flexible, scalable, platform-based socket. An analysis of available COBs yielded a crack in the shell of these "fried egg" LEDs. While not exactly identical, there are similarities between contact pad locations that, when combined with the rectangular nature of the devices and diagonal contact pad placement, form the basis for the platform solution. As a result, a holder product, referenced off the corners of the COB, could yield a virtually limitless array of use scenarios with the varied COBs available on the market as well as those to come in the future.
The substrate differences among COB LEDs from difference manufacturers, however, added yet another issue that needs to be tackled by socket/holder suppliers. While most of the early COBs incorporated aluminum substrates, further investigation of the commercially available COBs indicated a number of COBs that are based on ceramic substrates (typically aluminum nitride). While not a significant differentiator, these two substrate variants have physical features that differ enough to require special handling due to their different material properties.
The aluminum substrate COBs are rather robust and in some instances are mounted using machine screws. On the other hand, ceramic-based COBs create some frustration for fixture manufacturers since unlike aluminum-based substrates where they could simply secure the COBs with a screw to a heat sink,The cleaningmachine is one of the most useful tools in a modern shop. these ceramic substrates are far too brittle to secure with screws and thereby mandate some sort of secondary attachment to ensure suitable thermal performance. Holder devices that accommodate the COB nuances mentioned in the previous paragraphs are appearing on the market. One solution to the interconnect challenge is a flexible, scalable, platform-based socket. An analysis of available COBs yielded a crack in the shell of these "fried egg" LEDs. While not exactly identical, there are similarities between contact pad locations that, when combined with the rectangular nature of the devices and diagonal contact pad placement, form the basis for the platform solution. As a result, a holder product, referenced off the corners of the COB, could yield a virtually limitless array of use scenarios with the varied COBs available on the market as well as those to come in the future.
The substrate differences among COB LEDs from difference manufacturers, however, added yet another issue that needs to be tackled by socket/holder suppliers. While most of the early COBs incorporated aluminum substrates, further investigation of the commercially available COBs indicated a number of COBs that are based on ceramic substrates (typically aluminum nitride). While not a significant differentiator, these two substrate variants have physical features that differ enough to require special handling due to their different material properties.
The aluminum substrate COBs are rather robust and in some instances are mounted using machine screws. On the other hand, ceramic-based COBs create some frustration for fixture manufacturers since unlike aluminum-based substrates where they could simply secure the COBs with a screw to a heat sink,The cleaningmachine is one of the most useful tools in a modern shop. these ceramic substrates are far too brittle to secure with screws and thereby mandate some sort of secondary attachment to ensure suitable thermal performance. Funding agreed to boost community safety
Four projects aimed at keeping people and communities safer are to receive extra funding following a decision by Derbyshire County Council.
A total of 76,000 will be shared between the four community safety projects which focus on keeping areas cleaner and safer, reducing re-offending and helping people with learning disabilities to stay safe. The solarpanel is available in a choice of shapes including dome and the traditional variety.
Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Communities Councillor Dave Allen said: “These four projects are very different but all have the same aim, which is to keep individuals and communities safer.
“I am pleased we can support these worthwhile projects which can make all the difference to people’s lives.”
A sum of 20,000 will go towards continuing a programme of general clean-ups and graffiti removal in areas nominated by district and parish councils, Community Safety Partnerships and the county council.
In 2012 a total of 37 clean-up schemes were carried out across the county through the Probation Community Payback Scheme.
Work has included removing vegetation and bushes, cleaning general debris and litter, removing fly-tipping, painting and decorating.
In the same period a contractor removed graffiti from 30 areas around the county including on bridges, subways, signs, a skate park, railings,The most highly praised, best rated streetlightinges are now available online. fences and walls.
The second project to benefit from the cash is a street lighting scheme where communities can put forward the case for additional lighting in areas where anti-social behaviour and crime are an issue.

The county council will give 3,500 towards the project which is a joint initiative with the Derbyshire Probation Trust and the Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner.

Electricians installed the last light-emitting diodes
A four-year project aimed at lightening electricity bills and lighting the way for seafarers in San Diego has been completed by the Coast Guard.
On Tuesday, electricians installed the last light-emitting diodes, or LEDs, in the San Diego area to fully update and “revolutionize” the region’s navigation aid system.
The green, red and white LEDs are used to mark channels on and above the water to allow safe passage to boats and other water users. They replace incandescent bulbs, which are similar to bulbs used in cars and homes.
The new technology has been fitted to all 64 buoys and “primary” aids in San Diego and Mission bays, and near Oceanside and San Clemente Island.
Petty Officer Melvin Zebrow-ski, officer in charge of the Coast Guard’s Aids and Navigation Team in San Diego, said the system is a big improvement.
“

A major milestone in the project came in February when the electricians installed a Led ceiling light array at the historic Point Loma lighthouse, removing an incandescent lamp that had been installed in 1999.
The smart technology is much more energy-efficient and cost-effective. Thanks to a sensor, the new LED beam at the lighthouse switches on at dusk and blinks out at dawn. The old one ran around the clock.
It means the working lighthouse will cost 48 cents a day to operate instead of $4.60, according to Coast Guard estimates.
“This is a major technological upgrade,” said Executive Petty Officer James Coleman, another member of the Coast Guard team. “We’ve replaced ’60s technology with today’s technology.”
For years, a Coast Guard team came out every three months to change six incandescent bulbs and check the foghorn, mounted on a wall in front of the lighthouse.
The process took hours.
Now, they’ll still come out quarterly to inspect the setup. They’ll time the blinking of the beacon; test the foghorn; and wash the windows — but they won’t have to swap the bulbs.
The Coast Guard thinks the long-running LEDs will last almost indefinitely without needing replacement.
The new lighthouse beacon will emit a brighter light, but with a shorter range.
The former bulbs could be seen from 24 miles away. The LEDs have a range of only 14 miles, but the Coast Guard says that’s still plenty of warning for mariners.
Something that hasn’t changed is the cadence of the Point Loma light. The signature of the lighthouse is a pulse of light every 15 seconds.
It lets mariners know they are approaching Point Loma, not Dana Point or San Pedro, Coast Guard officials said.
